ILECUs - International Law Enforcement Coordination Units

Without strong regional cooperation in police matters, many criminals would skip the justice once they leave the country. Furthermore, organized crime today is transnational oriented and does not know the borders.

In each Western Balkans country, Serbia included, European Union funded an International Law Enforcement Cooperation Unit (ILECU) which acts as the single focal point for exchange of information in international investigations on operational level. All cooperation with international police organizations, such as Europol, Frontex and Interpol are put under one roof.

As part of the project, regional interior ministers signed a memorandum on cooperation on September 2009, after which Serbia began with this programme. The Interior Ministry signed an agreement with the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Finance on improving the cooperation in the fight against international crime as part of the project realisation.

ILECU realised big benefits for Serbia, as it includes extended police cooperation and regional networking, joint investigation teams, mutual legal assistance, transfer of proceedings, requests for extradition, trainings and exchange information on crimes on regional level.
