WBIF - Western Balkans Investment Framework
Officially launched in 2009, the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) is a joint initiative of the European Commission, Council of Europe Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and European Investment Bank (EIB). It is an innovative financing initiative, bringing together grants and loans from the Commission, the partner international financial institutions and bilateral donors for infrastructure projects and socio-economic projects in the Western Balkans.
In Serbia the WBIF has supported 39 projects with an overall estimated value of EUR 5.4 billion. It has provided EUR 210.7 million in grants, out of which EUR 185 million from the EU and EUR 25.7 million from other donors. The loans signed on WBIF-supported have reached EUR 2.4 billion.
In the last decade with the help of WBIF projects Serbia received 122 km of motorways, water and wastewater systems for 780,000 people, flood forecasting and warning system for 1.8 million people living in the Sava River Basin, district heating systems were upgraded in 21 cities, five new higher education and research facilities have been built, two new courts have been renovated together with one prison for 500 detainees.
With up-coming projects healthcare treatment facilities for 1.3 million people will be built, 70 km of new high-speed roads and 220 km of railway lines will be rehabilitated, urban mobility for 1.3 million people in Belgrade will be enhanced through transport infrastructure rehabilitation, 370 km of electricity transmission lines upgraded securing power supply, additional water/wastewater systems for 1.6 million people will be ensured, and new prison will be built for 400 detainees.
