In these dark times, Serbia and the whole region can still rely on their biggest partner, the EU. Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi said:
Europe is facing an unprecedented public health crisis, but even in these difficult times we will always be there for our Western Balkan partners, who belong in the EU.
Western Balkans will receive €38 million in order to respond to immediate needs of public health system of each country in the region. The European Commission will provide supplies of medical devices and personal equipment, such as ventilators, laboratory kits, masks, goggles, gowns, and safety suits.
The European Commission will reallocate €374 million to help the socio-economic recovery of the region. To help mitigate the socio-economic impact of the coronavirus, the EU will redirect IPA funds to help the recovery in the Western Balkan partners. This will include support to the private sector, increasing social protection, with a specific attention to the vulnerable groups, and strengthening resilience in the public health sector.
In addition, the Commission is working with the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) and the Secretariats of the Transport Community Treaty and the Central Europe Free Trade Area (CEFTA) to facilitate the supply and movement of goods within the region, and between the region and the EU.
