New Thematic Collection on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Resilience in Serbia

Building on the outcomes of the International Conference “Disaster Risk Reduction – Models and Practices at International and National Level”, the Faculty of Security Studies with the support of EU and UNDP has published a new Thematic Collection of Articles focusing on disaster risk reduction and climate change resilience. This collection represents a timely and critical contribution as Serbia and the wider region continue to face the mounting impacts of extreme weather events.

Titled “Disaster Risk Reduction - Models and Practices at International and National Level”, the collection features contributions from leading Serbian and international researchers and reflects a growing recognition of the need for proactive risk management and sustainable recovery.

In their opening messages, H.E. Emanuele Giaufret, EU Ambassador to Serbia, and Žarko Petrović, Team Leader for Resilient Development at UNDP Serbia, highlight the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters across Europe – from floods and wildfires to droughts and mudslides – and emphasize the critical role of coordinated international cooperation, such as Serbia’s active engagement in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The monograph addresses not only technical and institutional aspects of disaster risk management but also mental health, economic resilience, and community preparedness. It brings attention to the €6.8 billion in damages and losses Serbia has faced from natural disasters over the past decade, underscoring the need for continued investment and reform.

The editors – esteemed professors Jasmina Gačić, Ivica Đorđević, and Mirjana Laban – stress that this collection marks a crucial step in enhancing Serbia’s disaster preparedness. They draw attention to its value as both a scientific foundation and a practical tool aimed at strengthening the capabilities of local governments and institutions.

With this publication, Serbia continues to demonstrate a commitment to transforming its disaster risk management systems through education, policy reform, and international collaboration—paving the way for a more resilient and informed society.

The publication is a part of a joint initiative “EU for Serbia Resilient to Disasters” financed by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, aimed at fostering a culture of prevention, preparedness, and resilience at national and local levels.
