Summary
Serbia is a major transit country in the region, bordering EU countries. With such geopolitical position, the main security risks and threats are irregular migration and cross-border crime. Improved border control standards are important to allow for smooth transit of people, goods, and services and reduce crime.
The EU supports Serbia in meeting legal, technical, administrative and institutional requirements of the EU visa acquis upon the EU accession. The Schengen Action Plan will ensure that national legislation, rules and procedures comply with the Schengen requirements and that there is a necessary number of competent border management staff. The focus is on modernised information and communication border infrastructure, better inter-institutional and international cooperation and regular exchange of information with neighbouring countries.
